Rise Is Open for Breakfast and Lunch

Rise is the new, and most welcome, addition to the eateries in downtown Mystic. I would love to tell you about the fantastic food and stellar service. We waited patiently for 45 minutes for a table on a sunny Sunday morning, before giving up and going across the street to Sift. Options! I love that about Mystic.

What I can tell you is that Rise is extremely popular in the morning hours. The people with whom we chatted while waiting had eaten at Rise before, and they recommended their favorite dishes. So, based on my statistically insignificant poll, this kitchen is killing it.

Rise is open for breakfast and lunch only. The restaurant isn’t large. There are two tables outside, maybe seven tables inside, and a long counter across the front window. I suspect the small size will be an advantage during the slower winter months in Mystic.

The chef/owner of Rise is a local. She has worked at Oyster Club and Engine Room, so she knows what she’s doing in the kitchen. The ingredients she uses are locally sourced, so the menu will change regularly to reflect what’s available.

Rise is open Monday and Wednesday through Saturday from 7 am until 2 pm, and Sunday from 8 am until 2 pm. They are closed on Tuesday. Visit their website for up to date info. Their Facebook page has photos that make you want to dash over for a stack of pancakes.

Golden Threads Consignments in Westerly

Located between The Blue Mitten and Dick’s World of Wine – every local knows at least one of those reference points – is a brand new consignment shop. Golden Threads Consignments is tucked into the corner of that plaza.

golden-threads-consignments8There was a bit of a snafu when we dropped by to investigate. Somebody had the keys to the shop, and it was neither of the people who were trying to open the store. We had a laugh and a chat while we waited for the keys to arrive. Golden Threads is a family affair, as explained to us by grandma and a very game high school lad who is the most polite teenager I think I’ve ever met.

Once we got inside, we were pleased to discover familiar brands: J Crew, Talbot’s, BCBG, Coach, Free People, Banana Republic. Merchandise was still being received in advance of their upcoming grand opening. Yep, we busted in before they were quite ready for us but, nonetheless, everything on display was in perfect condition. It is a small space, but well curated.

In addition to clothing, Golden Threads has jewelry, bags, shoes, and other accessories.

Like with all consignment shops, you never know what you’re going to find.

So, stop in and support this local business. I like them. You will, too. They will be happy to give you the parameters if you have clothing or accessories to consign. Their Facebook page shows new arrivals. Golden Threads is open daily from 10 am until 5 pm. They are closed on Monday.

Mystic Pirate Invasion 2016

The pirates are coming! The pirates are coming! The Mystic Pirate Invasion is upon us. Luckily, they always give Mystic advance notice of their shenanigans so we can prepare for their arrival.

The fun starts on Friday night, September 30, with a free showing of Hook in Mystic River Park. There are activities scheduled throughout the downtown area on Saturday and Sunday.

The downtown merchants always do a terrific job of organizing this event. There will surely be sales for pirates and non-pirates alike. The local restaurants are offering food and drink specials throughout the weekend. See you downtown!
